Extreme Cold Paris: From this Monday January 8, 2024, in response to the prevailing cold snap sweeping across France, the Île-de-France prefecture has taken decisive action by activating its “extreme cold” plan. This comprehensive plan involves the opening of an additional 274 emergency accommodation places throughout the week, a move announced on Sunday evening by the Paris prefect, Marc Guillaume.
Emergency accommodation places to prevent the Extreme Cold Paris
As the entire nation braces for a significant drop in temperatures, the Île-de-France prefecture, under the guidance of Prefect Marc Guillaume, has undertaken the responsibility to address the needs of the most vulnerable during this challenging weather period. The announcement specified the initiation of emergency accommodation places, with 50 spots designated for families or isolated women and an additional 50 spots for isolated men.
The “extreme cold” plan is an established system implemented by the prefects, which strategically activates additional emergency accommodation places to cater to the needs of the most vulnerable individuals in the community. This plan is set into motion when the perceived minimum temperatures plummet to exceptionally low levels, necessitating the use of public buildings not conventionally designated for such purposes, including gymnasiums or schools, as emergency reception centers.
Forecasters predict a radical and sustained drop in temperatures across France starting from Monday, with the national temperature indicator expected to remain below 0.9°C for at least four days next week. This prolonged cold snap is anticipated to persist until the end of the week, prompting the Île-de-France prefecture to take proactive measures to ensure the well-being of its residents by expanding emergency accommodations during this challenging weather period.
Paris’s Extreme Cold in 2024 : Emergency Accommodation and Reception Facilities
If you find yourself without shelter and uncertain about where to spend the night in Paris, it’s essential to be aware of the available emergency accommodation systems. These facilities are specifically reinforced during periods of extreme cold to provide crucial support. Comprehensive information regarding these services is outlined below.
It’s important to note that most reception structures do not permit direct accommodation requests on-site. In such cases, reaching out to the City’s social services becomes paramount, particularly the Social Reception Centers (PSA), Solidarity Integration Spaces (ESI), and various associations. These entities are well-equipped to offer information and guidance, working in collaboration with the Paris Integrated Reception and Orientation Service (SIAO). The SIAO maintains a comprehensive list of all emergency accommodation places in Paris, streamlining the allocation process.
Numerous hosting solutions are available, each tailored to different needs. If a vacancy is identified, individuals may be directed to Emergency Accommodation Centers (CHU) or Accommodation and Social Reintegration Centers (CHRS). For longer-term arrangements, options include integration studios, social residences, relay houses, and Therapeutic Coordination Apartments (ACT).
In case of urgent need, individuals are encouraged to contact 115 or reach out to a social worker for immediate assistance. It is through proactive communication with these support services that individuals can access the appropriate accommodations and resources to navigate challenging circumstances effectively.
The CHRS of the City of Paris
The Accommodation and Social Reintegration Centers (CHRS) of the City of Paris welcome, accommodate and support people in very precarious circumstances in the Parisian territory towards integration.
Qualified professionals implement these public service missions for residents, promoting their access to autonomy, while respecting their dignity, integrity, privacy and security. People are oriented by the Integrated Reception and Orientation Services (SIAO) which centralize accommodation requests and offers.
